Small...

The new issue of the online magazine Small is now available, click here for the link, i absolutely love this rug made from recycled blankets and hand stitched together - brilliant!

Today a photographer came to the store to take photos of some lovely artwork by Sydney artist Tamara Maguire of Tambatoys. Her work is being featured in the Herald Sun Home magazine - Go Tamara!

My Poppet exclusively stocks some limited edition prints of her work, this one is just one of my favorites, titled: There's room for you

Website now LIVE!

My web designer CC has done a great job in getting the website online quite quickly, Thanks CC :-)

Hopefully it will come up on search engines soon. In the mean time if anybody has a simple (and not too expensive) idea for promoting the shop, i would love to hear it...marketing is not my forte, but now that I'm a small business owner I'm learning new things every day, and having fun doing it.
How cute is this sailor toy and matching singlet by BLINK designs... Belinda from BLINK is so creative and I am lucky enough to be able to stock some brilliant one-off and limited production T-shirts that every one has been drooling over! Keep up the good work Belinda.

Ripple Revolution...

Looks like my ripple blanket project has inspired a few people to dust off their crochet hooks and start their own, this may be the start of a Ripple Revolution...Now what i really like is Chocolate Ripple cake (mine never looks as neat as this one), a little bit kitsch, a lot yummy!! I have yet to meet a man, woman or child that will say no to a piece or two (or even three!).

Picnic anyone?

Break and Enter!

Unfortunately I was woken this morning by a phone call telling me that my shop window had been smashed in. My poor little shop... how could something so horrible happen to such a sweet little store.
I was not alone, several retailers in the street had befallen the same fate. Luckily the 'perpetrator' (to use a very polite term) did not manage to get in and nothing was stolen, BUT the cleanup was a nightmare!
Apparently a very unusual occurrence for the Glenhuntly rd shopping strip - several other retailers came to visit and to offer some encouraging words of support. Thanks everyone for your kind words.
Not to worry...The shop is now sparkling clean, with brand new glass in the door - and ready to trade as normal...

My little project...

...is coming along nicely. Sort of inspired by Posie's ripple blanket that i had seen a while ago on her blog, although mine is wavy and a bit ridgy because i tend crochet with a higher tension. Mum says I should go one needle size up to counteract my "tense tendencies", but i quite like the texture it ads to the piece and in this photo it reminds me a little of a topographical map, esp. with the earthy colours.

I had the lovely Jenny (artist/interior designer/mum extraordinaire) drop in a couple of her canvases yesterday. This chook one is my favorite - Red, orange and pink work so well together - the perfect thing to brighten up a little girls room. It's amazing how many talented people are out in the community, undiscovered...until now.
Over the coming weeks I am hoping to feature stories about the talented people behind the labels/artwork. Who are they? What inspires them? ...
Time to get back to some real work...

Headaches...

Why does MYOB always give me a headache? I truly think it was designed 'by the makers of Panadol'!!
Everything is so illogical...anyway that was my rant for the day, I feel much better now.

I suppose you have to take the good with the bad.

No. 1 favorite thing about having my own little shop = Gift wrapping. I just think its brilliant!
Ever since i was a little girl, my dream job was working in the Myer gift wrapping dept. Matching the ribbons with the paper, making big bows, who will receive this gift? Will they tear the paper or fold it neatly? Maybe keep it for a nice craft project. some decoupage maybe...

Party!

Yesterday was the 'Official' opening party for My Poppet. Friends and Family had the opportunity to see why I've spent the last two months ignoring them all. Thanks to every one that came and have supported me with your lovely words of encouragement.

Now, I've realised that until the shop develops a regular clientele, I am probably going to have a lot of spare time on my hands. Being the crafty gal that I am I decided that I should be using my quiet time productively.

Raided mum's wool stash the other night, inspired by the lovely green and brown tones of this groovy 'chalk n cheese' top, and am going to make a crochet pram blanket. Will keep you all posted on the progress.

Grand Opening...

Well, finally after many months of hard work it's open! My Poppet, a collection of lovely things for little children. Lots of well designed and handmade pieces by local Melbourne and Australian designers and artisans (including me).

It took a while (especially after alot of self doubt and procrastination), but it's amazing what one can do when you set your mind to it.

I have always wanted my own blog - I have been reading them for years and never had a really good reason to start one until now. I suppose it takes something you have great passion/excitement about to make you want to share it with the broader community. I have always admired all of you crafty people out there and i thank you all for the inspiration you have provided to all us common folk plodding along from one day to the next. I hope through My Poppet I can share some of your brilliant work with the non-blogging community of Melbourne.
Now, I will apologise in advance for my poor spelling/grammar and excessive use of (inappropriate) punctuation and exclamation marks!!

With that out of the way...lets take a tour of my lovely store.
